Microsoft Windows is the name of several versions of an operating system.
Originally started as an add-on for DOS, it's now the most used desktop OS. Several versions have existed over the years, of which the latest is Windows Vista for desktops, and Windows Server 2008 for servers.
The first 32-bits version of Windows was NT 3.1, which had a look and feel like Windows 3.1. While the NT versions were fully 32 bits, the Windows 95, 98 and ME versions weren't, they were still based on DOS and had parts that were still 16 bits. Windows XP was the first fully 32-bits version, based on an NT kernel, for consumers.
