Adobe (was: Macromedia or Shockwave) Flash is a browser plugin for most commonly available browsers for rich multimedia browser based applications. It's a popular way of adding animation and client-side interactivity to websites, and sometimes as a way of creating movie players.

Flash is available for most platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. There are tools available to create flash applications, the most commonly used is the one from Adobe itself, Adobe Flash CS3 Professional.
